Application of Floating Ball Valve

This valve is suitable for all kinds of pipelines that are fully open and fully closed, not for throttling.

How the floating ball valve works

Floating ball valves are operated by a shaft or stem attached to the top of the ball, which rotates the ball 90 degrees (a quarter turn). As the ball rotates, the ports are covered or exposed by the walls of the valve body, releasing or stopping the flow of media. The connection between the stem and the ball is loose enough that as the ball rotates around its axis, fluid pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat, creating a tight seal. For this reason, floating ball valves may not seal effectively in very low pressure applications after a certain amount of seat wear has occurred. This is because there may not be enough media pressure to force the ball against the downstream seat to form a tight seal. In most applications, however, the downstream pressure is sufficient to maintain a tight seal long after the seat begins to wear.

Advantages and disadvantages of floating ball valve

Advantages of floating ball valve:

• Low fluid resistance, the drag coefficient is the same as for the same length of pipe.

• Simple structure, small size and light weight.

• Tight and reliable. At present, the most widely used sealing surface material for floating ball valves is plastic, which has good sealing performance and has been widely used in vacuum systems.

• Fast shutter speed and easy operation. Rotate up to 90° from fully open to fully closed position for easy remote control.

Disadvantages of floating ball valve:

• The sealing surface of the ball is easily damaged and is not suitable for applications where the medium contains particles.

• Soft-seal valves are not suitable for high temperature and high pressure conditions.

• Hard-sealed valves require high sealing force and high torque to form a protective barrier.
